COSTING OF MEDICAL SERVICES

Health care poses one of the major challenges in developing countries. Cost of medical services though subsidized to a major extent remains beyond the reach of poor people. In a country like India, where majority of our population live on a “tight survival budget” any marginal increase in charge makes ‘life’ more difficult.

As a member of cost accounting profession, it has been my dream to make an analysis/ study of “Cost of Medical Services” as prevalent in India. To begin with, our team has selected following bodies in which we shall carry out some cost / technical analysis and also try to understand their operational mechanism for providing medical solutions:

1.      All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

2.      National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro- Science, Bangalore.

3.      All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore.

4.      PGI of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.

5.      Kasturba Health Society, Wardha; and

6.      National Academy of Medical sciences, New Delhi.

In our initial study we have tried to obtain information from the target organizations about their funds deployment and per unit expenditure on service provided. Though care has been taken to attain optimum level of correctness of the information, the ‘team’ shall prefer to intimate readers or users to maintain reasonable caution before making any decision. Figures have also been rounded off wherever felt necessary for making a comparative analysis. Details of the funds deployed etc. is given below for each of the said organizations:-
